The Ghana Licensed Surveyors, What You Should Know

In Ghana, the licensing of surveyors dates back to the colonial period and is enshrined in the various legislation promulgated from pre-colonial times to date. These were the survey ordinances and currently the Survey Act 1962, Act 127.

Typically, most licensed surveyors work to support the land administration system by providing certified and or cadastral plans and maps for land conveyancing. Others are into research, whilst many also support the adjudication system of the judicial service by giving expert evidence on boundary dispute settlements.

The Association is governed by a Constitution having been promulgated by an assembly at the headquarters of the Survey Department, Accra of practising Licensed Land Surveyors in Ghana by summons of the Director of Surveys, Ghana, on the 14th day of September 2005. It was legally registered

The aims and objectives of the Association are rooted in international professional standards of world organisations dealing with the practice of land surveying, the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and various subsidiary legislations in the Country.

Basically the Association aims to achieve the following;

1. To foster bonds of unity among Licensed Surveyors of Ghana.
2. To maintain and promote the usefulness of Licensed Surveyors as a profession to the public’s advantage.
3. To formulate, maintain, and observe a strict code of professional ethics amongst Licensed Surveyors.
4. To secure the well-being and advancement of the Licensed Surveyors.
5. To organise workshops, seminars, symposia for members as a means of providing continuous professional education for all Licensed Surveyors in Ghana.
6. To promote through the education of the public to restore the image of Licensed Surveyors in Ghana.
7. To educate Licensed Surveyors on the need to produce and certify works of appreciable and acceptable standards.
8. To ensure strict adherence to the land survey laws of Ghana.
9. To render assistance both morally and financially to Licensed Surveyors in times of need.
10. To establish good working relationships with other Licensed Surveyors’ Associations within the Commonwealth and other nations.
11. To collaborate with all the land sector agencies in the formulation and implementation of policies to promote and protect land rights and sustainable development in Ghana.
12. To hold meetings of members and other persons who may:
    • Possess knowledge that may be of interest and value to members.
    • Be interested in subjects discussed by members.
13. To formulate, amend, promulgate and administer bye-laws and Regulations, regarding the Association and its interests in general.
14. To promote, if necessary, any legislative measure or to petition Government or any other legislative or administrative body on any matter affecting Surveying and allied disciplines.
15. To acquire either by purchase, lease or otherwise, any property whether moveable or immoveable, which may be necessary from time to time for the requirements of the Institute and to sell, let, or otherwise dispose of all or any such property when considered desirable in the interests of the Association.
16. To do such acts and to undertake such engagements as may be conducive or incidental to the attainment of the foregoing objectives.
17. To promote and protect the character and interests of the profession of Surveying and to uphold the status of the Association.
18. To provide counsel in the settlement of professional disputes involving members of the Association.
